Product Key Management

When AspenTech Inmation OT DataFabric is purchased, a product key must be requested from Support after installation of the software. This can be then entered via the Manage Product Key dialog or using the Lua API.

Product Key Expiry

When the Product Key expires, it will no longer be valid and the software will enter Grace Mode until a valid product key is entered.

Without a valid product key, the system enters a Grace Mode period which lasts for 8 hours, during this time the software is fully functional but a valid product key needs to be entered to continue using the software.

After the grace period has ended, the software switches to "No Product Key" Mode where all consumer connections (Web API, OPC Server and WebStudio) will be blocked until a valid product key is entered.

In "No Product Key" Mode, functions such as data historization, store and forward and Lua script processing will all continue as normal. Only client/consumer connections will be blocked.

Please read the How can I view information about my current Product Key status? section below for information on how to view the current status.

FAQ

How can I obtain a product key?

Product keys must be requested by contacting Support and quoting your System GUID. This can be found by connecting to the Top-Level Node with Config App, then using Add Tab  Console and running the Lua command:

return syslib.getobject(syslib.getnodepath()):guid()

Alternatively, open the Server Info Dialog and switch to the Manage Product Key tab. The System GUID can be copied from here.

How can I enter the product key?

Product keys can be entered in WebStudio using the Manage Product Key tab of the Server Info Dialog, accessed by clicking the connection indicator in the main WebStudio app bar. Please see the Manage Product Key section of the documentation for more details.

Product key information can only be updated in the Manage Product Key tab whilst connected to WebStudio using a profile with administrator privileges.

The setproductkey Lua API can also be used to enter a product key.

How can I view information about my current Product Key status?

To see information about the current product key status in the system, connect to the Node and open the Server Info Dialog by clicking the connection indicator in the app bar. Then, switch to the Manage Product Key tab to view the product key information.

You see information about the activation state information through the Lua API getlicenseinfo function. Connect to Top-Level Node with Config App, then use Add Tab  Consoleand run the Lua command:

return syslib.getlicenseinfo()

What happens to the system without entering a valid product key?

A Node without a valid product key, or with an expired product key, will continue to run in grace mode for a period of 8 hours. In grace mode the Node is fully functional but will warn the user. After the grace period, it switches to "Product not activated" mode.

What happens to a deployment where grace period is expired?

The backend switches to "Product not activated" mode. It will continue to operate normal, but all consumer connections are blocked by denying authorization requests (Web API, OPC Server and Webstudio). Data historization operates normally, including Store And Forward. Lua script processing will also continue to operate as normal.

How do I enter a product key if my system is not activated and the grace period has ended?

Once the grace period has ended, it is not possible to connect to the Node via WebStudio or using the WebAPI. In these circumstances, the Node should be restarted which will restart the 8 hours grace period and the product key can be entered in the Manage Product Key tab of the Server Info Dialog or via the Lua API.
